A Little History

Settled in the 1850s, Oakland was once the industrial and social hub of Orange County. Its early agricultural economy, initially driven by cotton, quickly shifted to lucrative citrus groves. The town's true "Golden Age" arrived in 1886 when it became the headquarters for the Orange Belt Railway. During this boom, Oakland flourished with hotels, an opera house, a hospital, and a bustling downtown. However, this prosperity came to an abrupt halt following the disastrous freezes of 1894 and 1895, which decimated the citrus industry, followed by a devastating fire that swept through the commercial district. Rather than rebuilding into a metropolis, Oakland settled back into a quiet, unpretentious agricultural community, choosing to preserve a slower pace of life that still defines it today.
