Quick Answer

Florida grades every public school from A to F each year. The grade comes from test achievement, learning gains, and, for high schools, graduation rates and college and career results. It does not decide where your child attends. Your home address and your district's zoning do that, so check both before you buy.

Florida school grades at a glance

  • Who grades: the Florida Department of Education, for every public school, every year.
  • What counts: student achievement on state tests, learning gains, and for high schools, graduation rate and college and career acceleration.
  • What does not count: the principal, the programs, the culture, and whether a particular child will thrive there.
  • Where your child goes: decided by your home address and your district's attendance zone, never by the grade.
  • Where to check: the state's Know Your Schools portal for grades, and your county's school locator for zoning.

Moving here? Why is the school grade the first number everyone quotes?

Ask about a neighborhood in Winter Garden, Windermere, Clermont, or Lake Nona and someone will say it within a minute. Great schools. A rated.

Here is what almost nobody can tell you: what that letter is actually made of. If schools are driving your move, and for most relocating families they are, you deserve to know what the grade measures, what it does not, and how to check the exact school tied to the exact house you are looking at.

What does a Florida school grade actually measure?

The Florida Department of Education calculates a grade for each public school from a set of components. Each component is worth up to 100 points, and the school grade is based on the percentage of total points the school earns.

Depending on the school level, the components include:

  • Achievement: how students perform on statewide assessments in English Language Arts, math, science, and social studies.
  • Learning Gains: how much students improve from one year to the next in English Language Arts and math.
  • Learning Gains of the Lowest Performing Students: a separate look at growth for the students who started furthest behind.
  • Graduation Rate: for high schools, the share of students who graduate in four years.
  • College and Career Acceleration: for high schools, results such as Advanced Placement and dual enrollment success and industry certifications. Middle schools have an acceleration component of their own.

First, the point scale that turns points into a letter can change by school year and school level, and the Department publishes a calculation guide for each year. The most recent grades, for the 2025-26 school year, were released on July 1, 2026, and the grading scale changed for 2025-26, so be careful comparing this year's letter with older ones. Second, a grade is a snapshot of test based measures. It is a real signal. It is not the whole school.

The schools page pulls the county finders and the state report cards together, and each community page lists its zoned schools.

What does an A grade not tell me?

It does not tell you about the principal, the programs, the magnet and academy options, the arts, the sports, or whether your particular child will thrive there. It does not tell you what the school felt like at drop off this morning.

Use the grade as your first filter, not your final answer. Then do what local parents do: look at the component scores behind the letter, check the programs, and visit.

How do I find the zoned school for a home address?

Your child is assigned to a public school by home address. In the Orlando area, your county school district's locator is the source of truth, not a listing website.

  1. In Orange County, which covers Winter Garden, Windermere, Oakland, Dr. Phillips, and Lake Nona, use the Orange County Public Schools Find My School tool and enter the exact home address.
  2. In Lake County, which covers Clermont and Mount Dora, use the Lake County Schools school locator, which accepts a full address.
  3. In Osceola County, which covers Celebration, use the Osceola district school zoning page.
  4. Check the school year the result applies to. Districts can and do adjust zones as new schools open and areas grow, and a house can be rezoned between the year you shop and the year you enroll.
  5. Run this check before you write an offer, not after. If a specific school is a must have, the address has to come first.

Every county finder is linked in one place on the schools page. Touring communities? Each community page, from Summerlake in Horizon West to Legends in Clermont, is a starting point for the schools conversation. Browse the Winter Garden, Windermere, and Clermont area pages to see which zones feed which neighborhoods.

How do I check the official grade for that school?

  1. Go to the Florida Department of Education's Know Your Schools portal at knowyourschoolsfl.org.
  2. Search for the school by name and open its official report card.
  3. Look past the letter. The report card shows the component scores behind the grade, plus prior years, so you can see whether a school is trending up, holding steady, or slipping.
  4. Compare two or three schools side by side using the portal's map and compare tool.

That is ten minutes of homework that listing sites cannot do for you, because third party school ratings are not the state grade, and they are often years out of date.

What is the short version for house hunters?

Hamlin Middle School lettering on the school building in Winter Garden, FloridaGrade the school on the state portal. Zone the house on the district locator. Do both for every serious contender, in that order, before the offer. Buyers who flip that order fall in love with a kitchen first and a school zone second, and one of those two can be renovated.

Frequently asked questions

Who assigns Florida school grades?
The Florida Department of Education. Every public school receives a grade from A to F each year, calculated under the state's accountability system.

What is a Florida school grade based on?
Points for student achievement on statewide assessments and learning gains, plus graduation rate and college and career acceleration for high schools. The grade is the school's percentage of total points earned.

Does a school grade decide which school my child attends?
No. Your home address and your district's attendance zones decide that. The grade only describes the school's performance.

Where can I see the official grade for a school?
On the Florida Department of Education's Know Your Schools portal at knowyourschoolsfl.org. Avoid relying on third party ratings on listing sites, which may be outdated.

Can school zones change after I buy a home?
Yes. Districts adjust attendance zones as communities grow and new schools open. Verify the zone for the school year your child will enroll, not just the current year.
